Rosa Mystica is based on Jean Genet’s book Miracle of the Rose, where the protagonist compares a group of sleeping pirates to a rose.
Behind the otherworldly glow of Lorrein’s Rosa mystica was not a female, but a male figure. Behind Dante’s Rosa sempiterna, not angels were revealed, but pagan divine beings who fall in love with mortal men. Jean Genet created his own version of de Lorrein’s and Dante’s roses, which for him is typically opposed to prevailing moral standards. He composed his own rose of half-naked pirates dressed in knee breeches.
