A Suckling Fig represents the sacred fig tree, Ficus Ruminalis, which suckled Romulus and Remus with its sap before a she-wolf entered.
Everyone remembers how a she-wolf suckled Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome. When telling the founding myth of the city, one often forgets the episode in which the fig tree drained, i.e. suckled, its nutritious sap for the little ones. The fig tree, Ficus Ruminalis, grew on Palatinus Hill, and the first version of the suckling she-wolf statue was erected under it.
